6 Month Update: No More Purple Pills!!!!!
Hello everyone who does a google search for:
Laproscopic Nissen Fundoplication.. I notice I get quite a few hits about my blog on this subject, My surgery was 6 months ago,, How am I doing?
I'm doing GREAT! I'm so happy I had the procedure, I wished I'd done it sooner....
PROS:
- No more Purple Pills
- Sleeping all night with "zero pain"
- I've actually lost weight
- My eating habits have changed for the better
- I can't finish a soda
- Smaller meals, More frequent
CONS:
- I can't eat bread that has not been toasted
- I can't burp to save my life
- The air has to find a way out (You do the math)
- You must eat slower (which is actually a Pro)
These are just a few of the highlights, It has actually changed the way I do everything from exercise to sleeping.... Those of you with Gerd/Acid Reflux know the misery we have (Did have, Ha ha)....Those who are considering this procedure I say what are you waiting for..? Please, by all means if you have any questions ask your Doctor, If you want to talk to someone who has been thru this along with with all the other goodies that goes with it ... don't hesitate to ask ..... @ FlyAArmy@gmail.com. My Doctor gave me the text book spiel about what I could expect, she handed me all the pamphlets, I read all the information... I just wished I could of spoken to someone prior to the procedure. Not that it would of really mattered, Once I heard that I would not have to deal with heartburn anymore... I ran to the operating room and said: "I'm next"...
Of course, I went thru all the pre-op procedures:
- EGD with biopsies
- Esophageal manometry
- 24 hour pH study off acid medications (7 days off PPIs; 48 hrs off H2 receptor blocker)
- I was @ 87% stomach acid level...A Normal person is at 14%
- Barium esophagram
TBH (The better half) & Nurse Maid, said he was actually impressed at how quick I recovered. I followed the "Diet" they give you for about 3 weeks, Then I said the heck with this and started eating real food as tolerated... (Nacho's not a good idea for awhile.. just an FYI) I wish you all the best & Thanks for lookin ....

I am having mine done in a couple weeks, I am a bit nervous about some saying they will never be able to throw up again (flu) and some even saying they had to go back to have theirs undone as they couldn't get food down. Did you have the full wrap or a partial?
Dear Anonymous:
I hope we are talking about the same thing, This surgery was for Acid Reflux,,, I wasn't given an option of "full" or "Partial", Like a Lap Band,,,
The only issue with food that I've had is with un-toasted bread.
I guess I've had wonderful luck with the fact i've not had to throw up since I have had this procedure...I got sea sick on a cruise a few weeks ago...but I never did throw up...
I hope this helps, If you have further questions, I can be reached at FlyAArmy@gmail.com
Good Luck with yours, I love the fact that I've had mine done, I don't regret having mine done for one minute!
Hi. I'm scheduled for Nissen Fundiplication 2/21.
Are you still happy with your resultes?
Yes, Lisa ~ I am still so very HAPPY with the results I've had with my Fundoplication!!! I wish you all the best in your procedure . . . If you leave your email, I'd love to hear how you feel afterwards! ...
It is so refreshing to finally find a blog from someone who had this surgery! Any info on foods you tolerated after the surgery, side effects, life after fundo, etc would be so appreciated. I am scheduled for June 24th surgery. Thanks!

Hi, I just had my Nissen 3 weeks ago. I have had issues with the soft food diet, but that is slowly resolving itself. The surgeon was concerned because I lost 12 pounds in the first 2 weeks because I would have pain and cough up food. I was very active before this surgery. I am frustrated because I am unable to get a straight answer as to when i can return to weight training and irish dancing (used to this type of exericise 4 times per week). I also have not been given a time table as to when to move on to other foods. Also, today, I did feel a bit of that familiar reflux burn for the first time since having the surgery, I am a bit worried I went through this and will still need Nexium after 13 years of suffering and taking these drugs. Any help regarding these concerns would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Virgogirl67
I'm sorry you are having a few issues,, 3 Weeks after your surgery. I was pretty much feeling "Normal"... At this point I was eating what I was craving... Within 30 days I was back to my Physical activities in the Army as tolerated... Still all these years later, i have taken another Nexium,,, As with anything after something like this, Take baby steps with food & physical activity,, I hope you are feeling better Sooner, Than Later!
Just had mine, a week and a half ago, how soon til you tried soda? I'm craving it soo bad!!
I would wait... Because what do you do when you drink soda? You Burp ~ Trying to burp this early can/could be painful ~ I did ask my Doctor, When I could have soda... Of Course his answer was the "Professional" answer.. Don't drink it... & Of course I did.. but It took me about a month & then I did as he suggested.... Open your soda, let it sit for for a bit to reduce some of the "Bubbles".... & Then just small sips!! I hope this helps... Good Luck
